ThanksGiver Schweiz is an organization entirely run by volunteers. We have a team of volunteers at our head office in Pratteln who make sure the organization runs smoothly and can continue to grow. And at each food bank location we have a volunteer management team that runs and coordinates the weekly food banks.

ThanksGiver Schweiz is funded by foundations, businesses, and private donations. All funding goes directly to our core operations. The more funding we receive, the more individuals and families in need we can support. We welcome any donation, no matter how big or small.

Where does the food from the food banks come from?

Do clients need to register to receive a weekly food package?

To be eligible for a weekly food package, clients need to meet certain requirements and be registered at a specific location. Registration availability depends on location.

What happens to food ‘left overs’ from the food banks?

We partner with local farmers and private parties for  left over produce to be used — as much as possible — as animal feed. As part of our future vision, we aim to develop a full circle bioconversion farm.

What do you do as a volunteer at a food bank?

As part of a ThanksGiver Schweiz food bank team, you’ll play a crucial role in food collection, preparation, and in the distribution of food packages. As a volunteer you will help with:
·       Assisting with loading and unloading food delivery vans
·       Receiving and sorting food donations
·       Packing food packages 
·       Helping with the distribution
·       Supporting cleanup efforts after distribution

Do I need to register to volunteer?

Yes! Please register to let us know that you are coming. As food bank operations can get hectic, please arrive on time at chosen location so we can give you a proper welcome. Details, including addresses and availability can be found on our website.

How long is a volunteer shift?

Accepted Answer

Depending on the location and the deliveries of the day, a volunteer shift lasts anywhere between 3 to 4 hours. We’ll provide coffee, tea, and a small snack to keep you energized.

What should I wear?

Comfort is key! While aprons will be provided, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes you don’t mind getting a little messy.

Do I need to speak German?

Our organization serves an international community, and while English is the main language spoken, we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds.

How old do you need to be to volunteer at a food bank?

We welcome those 16 years of age and older to join us at our food banks. Children 10 and older are welcome to join, but will need to be supervised by a parent or guardian, as the nature of the work is hectic and, at times, intense.
